Frequently Asked Questions
I am interested in purchasing the slayer. My question is do you have to keep the device on all the time for it to work effectivly or can you just turn it on when requires. I do not have a mosquito problem throughout the day only at dusk and dawn and some nights.
You should only need to operate the Mosquito Slayer when the mosquitoes are around. There are some things to consider though.
1. The mosquitoes are out at dawn – so are you going to get up at dawn to turn it on? Then are you going to be at home to turn it off when the mosquitoes aren’t there?
2. Similar for dusk – will you be at home to turn it on and then off again at night? Every single day.
For $1.43 a day I think I’d just leave it turned on full time. Turn it off when the weather gets cold enough that there are no mosquitoes and then turn it back on again when the weather warms up.
Just a query about the CO2 cylinders, how long will each cylinder last? Eg. Hours of use.
You will use just over 20kg using the trap 24 hrs a day 365 days a year.
It pays to ring around for prices. We did a ring around on the Gold Coast and found a degree of difference in both the bottle hire and re-fill prices. Also try the home brew outlets and Air Liquide www.airliquide.com.au
We can sell you 3kg bottles but you will be limited to where you can get them filled. BOC for instance will only fill their own hire bottles.
I have seen the mosquito control products on your website and have a couple of questions.
1. When purchasing either of these units does everything required to operate the system come with it? (I am aware that gas is not included)
2. How close to the outdoor entertaining area is the unit best placed?
3. What is the difference between the two units, is one more effective than the other?
1.You don’t require any additional purchases with the Mosquito Slayers. The units come with a gas modulators, Bantol 181 mosquito and midge lure, a waterproof 12v transformer and 10m of 12v waterproof extension lead in the Mosquito Slayer Pro and 5m with the Series 4. You are correct, the gas is not included.
2.It is best to place the units at least 4-5m away from where you sit in the outdoor entertainment area. The idea is for the insect to pass the unit and then in picking up the CO2 they turn their back on you and face the unit. If you and friends were sitting around a table and the Mosquito Slayer was to close you would all overpower the unit with your CO2, body heat etc.
3.Both units operate the same and as effective as each other. The difference is the Mosquito Pro model is able to project the CO2 and lure further. Hence the 1 acre coverage. The Mosquito Pro has a small fan in the top of the unit which broadcasts the CO2 and lure further. The main difference between the Pro and the Series 4 is in the water/trap trays. The Series 4 has a 2 litre tray to the Pro’s 7 litres. Therefore the Series 4 will need topping up more often. We find people living in more temperate climates, and on a normal residential allotment the Series 4 is ample. North of about Rockhampton can be quiet warmer with higher evaporation rates and people tend to go for the Pro with its larger supply of water and hence more time between topping up the tray.
I was looking at your product and I was wondering how well it works near a creek with mangroves.
I suppose the best way to answer your question is the 100% money back guarantee if it doesn’t catch mosquito or midge is offered by the manufacture here in Queensland. We have sent units all over Australia and have never had one back. We have had some calls of problems but after we gave a hand and resited the trap it worked fine. Our last unit ( Slayer Pro) went to Darwin and he lives on acreage with bush to the rear and a large overgrown lake to one side. He phoned us after the first day of operating to say the water tray was completely covered with midge.
We can’t say we will remove every mosquito and midge from the area and you will never be bitten again. Nothing can achieve this (and I would be vary wary of any product that states that it can) but you will notice a great reduction in the insects to a point you will be able to enjoy the outdoors again. (See our testimonials) Mosquitoes generally come from an area of only 35m away. Midge are easy to control as they usually only fly on light to nil wind and should head straight for the trap.
So will it work near a creek with mangroves? Yes it will. There are units operating at Sanctuary Cove Resort, Hope Island and Coomera Waters – all on the river and all had sever mosquito and midge problems. In this instance you should probably be looking at the Mosquito Slayer Pro and take advantage of its better CO2 and lure spreading capabilities.
How safe is the CO2?
CO2 is the gas used to give bubbles in soft drink and is what trees breath in at night to convert to the oxygen we breath. The Mosquitoe Slayers emit about 3 grams of CO2 per hour. This is a very small quantity. However you should not use CO2 indoors. Over a long period of time, provided all the doors and windows are sealed, the CO2 may deplete the room of oxygen. This is why the Mosquito Slayers are recommended for outdoor use only.
I think the gas has stopped working. How can I tell?
We have been getting a few calls lately regarding this issue. If the CO2 bottles are not cleaned thoroughly when they are refilled a build up of residue can deposit in the hose. (They are supposed to be cleaned at each refill, this is why we recommend food grade gas)
To check when you change the modulator place the end of the hose in a glass of water and turn on at the bottle. You should see the gas surfacing up through the water. (About 2 bubbles per second) If no gas is visable turn off and remove the hose from the bottle. Place a small amount of circuit board cleaner (avilable online from Dick Smith Electronics) into the end of the hose that attaches to the CO2 bottle, reconect to the bottle and turn back on. This should clean out any residue in the gas line.
If you have one of the new black hoses, undo the small screws on either side of the bottle connection then apply the spray as above. When tightening the screws back up to adjust the gas flow be patient and DO NOT OVER TIGHTEN. This will completely crush and block the gas line.
Hi, was wondering how discriminate the unit is in terms of which insects it attracts? We are in Victoria, we’d like to reduce the mozzies around the house but don’t want to kill every insect around!
The Mosquito Slayer traps have been specifically designed to attract and kill the female mosquito, midge and sand fly. These are the insects that cause us irritation and spread disease. Occasionally you will get a small number of moths in the traps. This is slightly more evident with the Mosquito Slayer traps sold with UV tubes. We sell all our traps with LED UV’s. We made this decision for two reasons – less moth by-catch and cheaper operating costs for our customers. The UV tubes need replacing about 4 times a year whereas the LED’s will last the life of the main electronics board.
One more thing to note is the Mosquito Slayer Pro has a grill at the insect entry point. This grill is small enough to keep out most moths. The Series 4 unit does not have this grill. If you have a look on our web site you will see the 2 traps side-by-side in the pictures on the home page. In the picture of the Pro on the left you can see the black grill. As for the Series 4 on the right the tray at the bottom is open.
Is there any problem with using with domestic pets in same yard?
The Mosquito Slayer products are completely safe to use around children and pets.
The lures are made from food grade material.
The power to the unit is 12v DC.
The CO2 gas is expelled from the unit at the same rate a person expels CO2 when we breath.
The only drawback is if your pet were to sleep beside the mosquito trap your pet would be competing with the Mosquito Slayer for the mosquitoes attention.
Should I hire or buy a CO2 gas cylinder?
We can supply you a 3kg or 6kg CO2 bottle (please call for pricing) but be aware the major CO2 suppliers may not fill your own bottle. Check first. Also be aware that the CO2 bottle requires periodic hydro-testing and servicing the same as your LPG barbecue bottles do. Most home brew shops will fill CO2 bottles and some will even allow you to buy a bottle and then use the swap and go system eg Keg King. Alternatively go to the Mykegonlegs web site and locate a CO2 brewing gas solutions supplier near you.
You really need to consider carefully before buying your own bottle. Right down to how much will it cost you in car expenses when you drive to the re-filler. Most purchase bottles are only 6kg, so you will be filling this up 4 times per year. Even here on the Gold Coast we decided to rent our own 10kg bottle from SupaGas. It is 1/2 an hour drive one way to our nearest re-filler. And SupaGas deliver.
This is not a question from a customer, it is some information if you are considering hooking two Mosquito Slayer traps to the one gas bottle.
As well as selling Mosquito Slayers we also install and service the units. Recently we had an installation whereby two Series 4 traps had been installed at each end of a house with the gas bottle placed beside one of the traps and a tee piece was placed in the line and a 20m length of gas line was run to the other trap. No matter what we did we could not get equal pressure to both traps. Either blowing hard at the near trap to maintain the right flow at the furthest trap or correct flow at the near trap and none at the other.
One must remember that CO2 is not air, it is heavier and has different properties. It turned out that the friction in the longer 20m line was enough to restrict the flow to the furthest trap. This would not happen with air. If you are considering using 2 traps on your property it would be best using 2 separate gas bottles. Alternatively we can supply you with a breaching system that allows you to regulate the CO2 to the two traps independently. This is the setup we use for our commercial installations with multiple traps hooked to a single gas bottle.
